MYSTERIOUS MOON (February 2022)

To inspire our little learners to explore and learn about astronomical advances and discoveries they were engaged in an interesting activity, Mysterious Moon. They learnt about some fascinating facts about the bright celestial body, Moon. In the follow-up activity they made beautiful bookmarks depicting different phases of the Moon.

OREO COOKING MOON PHASES

(11 Jan – 24 Jan 2022)

The Astronomy Club of the Primary Department – GR Campus organised an interesting and fun activity for the students of Class IV wherein the students explored how the moon’s shape or moon phases change over the course of the month as perceived from the Earth. The 8 phases of the moon were recreated by the students using Oreo biscuits. They also shot a video of themselves explaining the different phases of moon. 

 

SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE BIGGEST STAR-SUN

Students of class IX & X attended an online session grached by Prof. Dipankar Banerjee- Director, Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, on 20 December 2021 under the aegis of Nehru Planetarium. Prof. Banerjee talked about the interesting facts and insights of our own star- The Sun

AN ASTRONAUT'S VOYAGE

On 18 December 2021 Nehru Planetarium organized a webinar on the topic- An Astronaut's Voyage familiarising participants with the journey of an Astronaut, beginning with their selection and leading them to space missions via rigorous training.

Aarajav Jain (IX-B)and Prachi Samant (IX-B) attended a webinar on 10 December 2021, organized by Nehru Planetarium on the theme, “Ethics of Space Activity”.

CAREER STORIES IN SPACE,SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

On 12 November 2021, Nehru Planetarium organized an online webinar for space enthusiast’s on the topic “Career stories in space Science & Technology”, with two eminent guests Dr. Narayan Prasad, Co-Founder & CEO-Sat-Search and Shri. Sneh Kesari, Director & CEO-Astrophile Education Services, New Delhi. The session gave insights about the field of space, Science & Technology. The program was attended by students from classes VI to XII 

WEBINAR BY SPACE INDIA

On 22 October 2021, students of class IX & X attended a webinar organised by SPACE India on the theme, "Women involvement in Astronomy and Space Science" and "Celebrating the Launch Anniversary of Chandrayaan 1”.

ANNUAL SPACE CONTEST

Atharva Keswani (VII E) and Asmita Mallick  (X A) made our school proud by winning First prize in the Annual Space Contest organized by the Nehru Planetarium, as a part of the Children’s fortnight 2021

 

NATIONAL SPACE DEBATE COMPETITION

Nikky Malhotra (XI B) brought laurels to school by winning the first Prize in a National Space Debate competition, organized by SPACE organization. She received a trophy and a cash reward of INR 5000/-.

World Space Week

Astronomy Club of the Primary Department invited students to the week-long celebration of World Space Week 2021. World Space Week celebrates Science and Technology, and the contribution of the same for human betterment. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. Apropos to this year’s theme, Women in Space, activities like Book mark Making , Tattoo Making, Astro Cooking , Mind Map , Tell me how were conducted in Classes IV and V.

Know Your Neighbour -Moon

Nehru Planetarium organized an online learning opportunity for students of class VII - VIII on the topic “Know Your Neighbor Moon”, on 18 September 2021. Ms.Kriti Tomar, research scholar & space enthusiast and science communicator, discussed - Earth’s Closest Neighbor in Space- Moon.

Sally Ride EarthKAM, an educational outreach program of NASA

 Divyajot Singh and Chahal Jain ( XI C) participated in the Sally Ride EarthKAM, an educational outreach program of NASA executed in India by SPACE from 20 – 23 September 2021. This unique scientific opportunity, enabled them to request images of their chosen location from a special digital camera mounted on the window of the International Space Station (ISS) , click photographs like Astronauts and examine the Earth from the unique perspective of space.

Newton's Law of Motion , an activity for the students of classes VI-VIII

‘Newton’s Law of Motion’ activity was conducted in the month of August 2021 for all the aspiring astronomers of classes VI-VIII. The participants made short videos consisting of vocabulary related to the scientific concept, explanation of Newton’s law of motion along with an enriching story woven on the concept.

 

WEBINAR ON SPACE TOURISM

    Astronomy club in collaboration with The Space organization provided the opportunity to the aspiring astronomers to attend a webinar on ‘Space Tourism’ held on 17 July2021. Space tourism is another niche segment of the aviation industry that seeks to give tourists the ability to become astronauts and experience space travel for recreational, leisure or business purposes. Students were acquainted with several options for space tourists and various requirements to visit a space station throughout the webinar.

ASK AN ASTRONOMER - An Event Organised by Nehru Planetarium

“Ask an Astronomer” – themed event was organized by Nehru Planetarium for students of classes VII, VIII & IX on 29 June 2021. Ten students at our school attended the online Webinar. It gave young minds an opportunity to interact with - research scholar & space enthusiast Shri Siddharth Madan and quench their curiosity about Astronomy and the Universe. Students learnt about concepts like- space time, dark energy, dark matter and all the mysterious objects in the universe.

FUN TIME with Author ,Binita Sen

On 23 June 2021, the students of class IV & V attended the session, “Fun Time”, with the author “Binita Sen”- a renowned children author and a storyteller, organised by The Nehru Planetarium. In this session, Ms. Sen shared a story with the students from her Book “What did Nepo Do with a Sari?  Later the session was followed by trash craft with the focus on the sustainable changes. Craft based activity was able to drive home the idea among the students that nothing is waste, and things can be reused and up scaled.

HAMARI VIRASAT- A Webinar by Nehru Planetarium

Five students of the Middle Department attended an enriching webinar on 21 June 2021. Webinar was organized by the Nehru Planetarium on the topic – ‘Hamari Virasat.’ Mr Robinson, the resource person, spoke about the heritage- architectural and living heritage of Delhi.

PREPARING BOOKMARKS

In the month of June, students of classes IV and V were encouraged to prepare bookmarks on the themes stargazing, constellations, moon in the night sky or any planet of their choice. This simple activity aimed at developing an appreciation for the universe of which we all are a part. During the same time period students of Middle Department explored different aspects of Eclipses- Solar and Lunar. They also prepared a short PPT exploring aspects of the eclipse.

LEARNING THROUGH MOVIES 

During the month of May, students of the Middle Department were encouraged to watch sci-fi movies like Interstellar, Martian, Deep Impact. They were expected to explore through research the scientific concepts shown in these movies like- black holes, time warp, gravity, challenges of living on another planet or galaxy and such similar concepts. They were expected to showcase their research in the form of a picture collage or a two-minute video explaining what they learnt from the movie.

SAT from Trash -An Activity for Middle School Students 

Every year from 1- 30 April, GAM - brings kids, old and grown-ups under the clear skies to cherish a month of astronomy events, activities and sky. To mark the celebration, our school organized “SAT from Trash Activity” for the students of the Middle Department. Many students participated and submitted pictures and videos of beautifully crafted models of satellites. They had used discarded items like- cardboard, paper strips, tissue papers, toothpicks, plastic bottles, foil paper, thread and similar things that were readily available at home for the purpose of making a satellite.
