Budding Scientists Club (2018-2019)

Catch the Fish : 14.02.19

In the activity conducted on 14.2.19 the students explored the Principle of Magnetism through a fun-filled hands-on activity -Fishing with Magnets. The students made beautiful fish  cutouts  with an iron clip pasted at its mouth. They also made a magnetic fishing rod with the help of a stick , wool and magnets.
Using their magnetic  fishing  rods our budding scientists were able to catch the fish placed in a bowl along with other objects like an eraser, wood pieces etc. They learnt that iron particles are attracted to magnet and thus were able to identify magnetic and non magnetic substances.

Layers of Soil  :  24.01.19

The students got an opportunity to learn about the different layers of soil with the help of an easy experiment in the activity conducted on 24.01.19.

By adding water to the sample of soil brought in a pet jar from home, they observed that the soil begins to settle into layers of minerals, clay, sand and organic matter when kept untouched for some time. The composition of soil was explained and importance of the top layer - humus for healthy growth of plants  was highlighted along with  need for soil conservation.

Fun with Shadows : 22.11.18

The students explored the concept of light and shadow in the activity conducted on 22.11.18. They were explained and demonstrated how a shadow is formed when the source of light is obstructed . They observed the shadow of their stick puppets in the sun’s light and torchlight. Through an intriguing video on shadows, the students were also explained how the length of a shadow changes with the change in position of the source of light. A story telling activity was also conducted using the puppet shadows to make the concept interesting & fun-filled.

Eye Spy  :  25.10.18

The students explored the oxidation property of lemon through the activity conducted on 25.10.18. They made invisible ink using materials like water and lemon juice after watching a video and demonstration by the teacher.

They encoded a secret message using the ink and were overjoyed to decode the message by keeping the paper over a candle flame under supervision of the teacher. The activity was a thrilling experience for the students who felt like spies and detectives.

Rain in Jar - 20.9.18

Our Budding Scientists learnt to make rain in a jar in the club activity conducted on 20.9.18. The concept of evaporation , condensation and precipitation was explained with the help of a presentation and video. This was followed by a demonstration of the experiment through which  the students saw formation of rain and explored the process of precipitation.
The students enthusiastically witnessed in the experiment which was conducted using a glass jar, a plate, hot water & ice cubes and cheered joyfully when they saw rain drops falling in the jar.
The scientific principle behind the occurrence was explained by the club master and observation was recorded by the students.

Wind Vane : 23.8.18

Our young ‘Budding Scientists’ learnt to make a wind vane in the club activity conducted on 23.08.18. The activity commenced with screening of a video  which highlighted the purpose and utility of a wind vane. This was followed by a demonstration wherein they were taught to make a wind vane using material like a straw , pencil , plastic glass etc. The students enthusiastically made their own wind vane and tried finding the direction of the wind. They were also apprised of the use of a compass.

Exploring Rocket Science  - 19.7.18

In the club activity conducted on 19.7.18,  the students explored the working of a rocket with the help of a simple experiment. After demonstration by the teacher , they created their own balloon rocket using a straw, balloon, string and cello tape. The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students.

Radiant Rainbow

The activity organised on 19.4.18 was aimed at exploring the scientific principal behind the formation of a rainbow. Through the hands-on the activity which was conducted in groups of five, the students used material like nail varnish, bowl and water created their own mini rainbow. Observing the formation of a rainbow in sunlight was indeed a thrilling experience for the students. They enthusiastically recorded their observation on A4 sheet.
