Me The Bookie Club (2019-2020)

‘Alice in Wonderland'  by Lewis Carroll 

 

The club activity organised on 30.01.20 commenced with a discussion on importance of books and the students were encouraged to maintain a library of their own at home. After the discussion they were shown the animated story Alice in The Wonderland, an interesting tale of a young girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar creatures. The screening of the story was followed by an interactive session wherein the students answered some basic questions related to the story. In the follow up craft activity the students created a colourful collage of the various characters of the story.

‘Malgudi Days' by R.K.Narayan

The activity conducted on 28.11.19 began with a brief on ‘Me the Bookie’ club followed by a discussion on importance of reading books.

The students were introduced to the  Indian writer R.K.Narayan and his famous books Swami and Friends , The Bachelor of Arts and The English Teacher.
The activity focused on the author’s most popular book – Malgudi Days, a collection of 32 fictional stories set in a small beautiful town called Malgudi in South India.
After an insight into the main character of the story Swami and his friends, the students were shown an episodes of the televised series of book on Tata Class Edge.
In the follow up craft activity they created a wall hanging with names and the pictures of the books written by R.K.Narayan. They were motivated to read more stories by the author and also watch televised series based on them.
‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'  by Roald Dahl

 

The students explored Roald Dahl's famous novel , Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the activity conducted on 24.10.19. The link for the online video based on the novel was shared with the parents through WhatsApp to motivate the students to read and get a glimpse of the story.

The activity commenced with a reading session in which the teacher   read out the summary of the story, which features the adventures of young Charlie Bucket, the central character, inside the chocolate factory. This was followed by a question and answer session.

In the follow-up craft activity the students made sweet  sticks. They made cutouts of their favourite sweet like doughnut , icecream,  Jalebis ,cakes etc and pasted it on the ice cream  sticks.

 

‘Black Beauty’ by Anna Swell
The students explored and read the story ‘Black Beauty’ by Anna Swell in the activity conducted on 26.9.19.
The activity commenced with a general discussion on importance of reading. The significance of the club was also highlighted by the club master. After the discussion the students were introduced to the main characters of the story which is narrated from the animal’s point of view.  They were then shown the story on the Tata Class Edge. In the follow up activity they  coloured the drawing of a horse (Black Beauty) and wrote a significant dialogue from the book on the sheet provided by the teacher. The YouTube link of the story was shared with the parents to motivate the children to read the book.
Adventures of the Wishing Chair  by Enid Blyton
In the club activity organised on 29.8.19, the students were introduced to the series - Adventures of the Wishing Chair  by Enid Blyton.
The students were briefed about the story  which revolves around Peter and Mollie and their adventures with the wishing chair which they find in an antique shop. This was followed by screening of an animated video based on the story. The main characters of the story were discussed and the students were motivated to read the book. As a follow-up activity, the students prepared a book mark and wrote a quote on it. The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students.
The Secret Garden  by Frances Hodgson 

The students got an opportunity to explore the classic novel -  The Secret Garden  by Frances Hodgson in the club activity conducted on 25.7.19. This tale of transformation is an exaltation of nature and its effects on the human spirit. The book reflects that the children are healed, not only through contact with nature and with each other but also through positive thinking.
The  animated video and the movie based on the book was shared with the students a week prior to  the club activity through whatsapp.
On the day of the club activity ,the  students were shown the animated video on Smart Class. This was followed by a detailed discussion about the different characters of the novel. In the follow-up activity, the  students made  a file cover and decorated it with paper leaves and flowers to depict a garden. The activity was thoroughly enjoyed by all the students.

Charlotte’s Web by E.B.White

In the introductory club activity conducted on 25.4.19, the club masters apprised the students of the aim of the Club - Me the Bookie and discussed  the importance of reading books.

They explored the Children’s Book – Charlotte’s Web , written by American author E.B.White . The students were given a brief about the characters of the story and then  were shown the same on  Tata Class Edge.
In the follow up craft activity they created their own Charlotte’s Spider with the help of paper plates and chenille stems /straws. The link of the animated movie based on the book was also shared with the students. They were motivated to read more books and explore the world of books.
