Astronomy Club : Archive

Since its inception in 2004, the Astronomy Club through its multifarious activities continues to inculcate a spirit of inquiry and scientific temper amongst the young learners.

  • On 7 February 2017 five students from classes VII to X attended Sally Ride EarthKAM workshop at Queens Valley School, Dwarka. Students got an opportunity to click pictures of earth via internet, through a camera located on ISS spaceship.
  • April 2015 was celebrated as Global Astronomy Month (GAM) by Astronomers worldwide. Following activities were conducted to popularize Astronomy in the school:
  • On 7 & 17 April 2015, ‘SUN’ Day was organized to observe the Sun through projection method.
  • On 10 & 23 April 2015, viewing of the stars, planets and constellations through telescope, binocular and naked eye was organized as Global Star Party
  • On 23 & 24 April 2015, Moon Watch was organized and its various phases were captured by the students through their cameras.
  • On 24 April 2015, Walking on Moon, an online observation was done through the telescope placed in Italy.
  • On 28 April 2015, GAM Concert, an online event, a symphony of sound and visuals created a dramatic and a lasting effect on the observer.
  • The school was declared the winner in the “Most Innovative Event” Category for the GAM Events.
  • Astronomy Fair was organised on 17 April, 2015 in the school playground. It was inaugurated by Chief Guest, Mr Suraj Prakash, Director, Teacher Training Centre, BBPS, Pitampura. Mr Pankaj Bambha, Director-SPACE was the Guest of Honour. Highlights of the program included :
  • Screening of short movie ‘Mars Orbital Mission’
  • Photo exhibition of club events and achievements
  • Use of Sky Maps for locating celestial objects
  • Demonstration of mechanics behind rocket launch
  • My weight on different planets- highlighting the role of gravity
  • Time and Direction stall – the use of shadow cast by an object to determine time and direction.
  • Solar Walk - simple items to explain the proportionate sizes of different planets. Comet kitchen stall- cooking of comet at home using daily utility items.
  • Astro Quiz
  • Solar Observation using different techniques
  • Drawing celestial tattoos on the arms and wrists of visitors.
  • On 23 & 24 April 2015 members of Astronomy club Module I & II went for an overnight session along with three teacher escorts to Astroport, a night observation facility developed by SPACE at Sariska. Students learnt how to use Messier’s booklet & sky map to locate various celestial objects.
  • On 2 May 2015, an evening session was organised for the club members of Module I & II. Module I students were introduced to stellarium.
  • Chahat Jain of X H & Simrat Singh of IX C were selected for the second phase, of AIASC (All India Asteroid Search Campaign), from 1 June to 6 July 2015. They attended the training workshop at DPS International, Pushp Vihar, Saket on 8 May 2015. The students have identified two Near Earth Objects (NEOs) during this period.
  • On 4 August 2015, an Orientation Programme was held by the organization, SPACE for initiating students of classes VI – VIII to Module I and Module II of the Astronomy Club for the session 2015-16. 43 students enrolled for Module I in the new session.
  • The school initiated the programme of Astronomy Workshops for classes IV to V under the aegis of the organization SPACE to enthuse young learners regarding various aspects of astronomy. An Orientation Programme was held on 18 August 2015, to encourage students to participate in the same. 54 students of class IV and 46 of class V have enrolled for the programme.
  • On 1 September 2015, the introductory session for Module I for classes VI – VIII focused on the topic ‘Journey through the Beam of Sun Ray’. An Astronomy kit was also distributed to each of the members.
  • On 28 September 2015, 10 students from classes VIII to XI attended a workshop organized by Nehru Planetarium celebrating the success of India’s ASTROSAT Mission.
  • Five students of classes VII and X attended the flagship project of SPACE –Project Pariddhi, at The Indian Height School, Dwarka on 1 October 2015. the ywere guided to calculate and measure the circumference of the air with the help of shadow cast by a straight standing object.
  • World Space Week was celebrated in October 2015. On the occasion, a tribute was also paid to the former President, Shri APJ Abdul Kalam, the missile man of India. A series of activities were organized for the club members on the theme, ‘Discovering Space’. The activities included – Book-mark Making; Model Making: Build Your Own Satellite; Locating Destinations: Explore the World with Google Maps; Interaction with NASA Scientists: Skype Chat; Screening Documentary Films on Astronomy; Creating Awareness about Latest Events in the Field of Astronomy in Morning Assembly programmes; and Art Competition based on the theme, Discovering Space.
  • Seven students of class XI C attended an interactive session, ‘Solar Study’ conducted by Prof. Helen Mason, University of Cambridge, on 4 December 2015 at Nehru Planetarium.
  • 80 students of classes VI to X participated in the NASA Astronomy Olympiad (NAO) -School Level which was held on 23 December 2015 in the school premises.
  • On 27 January 2016, a workshop for class IV students was held on the topic “Space Café.” It focused on Earth & Space and balanced meals for astronauts in Space Missions. On the same day, class V had a workshop themed- “What is your sun sign?” focusing on significance of Sun signs, Solar calendar and difference between Astrology and Astronomy.
  • On 10 February 2016, the school hosted ‘Sally Ride Earth KAM’, an educational program of NASA that enables students to select and take high quality images of Earth from a digital camera mounted at a nadir pointing window in the Destiny lab of the International Space Station (ISS). The workshop was conducted by the Mr. C.B. Devgun, President, SPACE organization. It was attended by 30 schools of Delhi.5 students from class IX and X of our school also participated in the same.
